Find out how long saving will take, or how much you need to save each month.

Enter your numbers above, then tap Calculate to see your result.

A savings goal calculator tells you how long it will take to reach a savings target or how much you need to save each month. Enter your goal, the amount you have already saved, your monthly deposit, and an expected annual return rate. It then projects your balance month by month, including interest, until the goal is reached.

Saving without a plan often feels vague. A clear timeline turns a wish into a monthly habit, and shows the trade-offs: save more now, start with more, or allow more time, and the finish date moves closer.

How a Savings Goal Calculator Works

The calculator works in two directions. In the first mode, you enter a fixed monthly deposit and it counts the months until your balance reaches your goal. In the second mode, you enter a deadline and it works out the monthly deposit you need. Both modes count money you have already saved from day one.

Interest is handled month by month. Each month, interest is credited on the current balance at the annual rate divided by 12, and then your deposit is added. That order matters, because interest earned in one month also earns interest later. This is why it helps to understand interest that compounds month after month when you compare savings accounts.

The calculator repeats the monthly step until the balance reaches the goal, up to 1200 months. If the numbers cannot reach the goal in that time, for example because the deposit is zero and the return rate is zero, it says so plainly instead of showing a misleading date.

How to Use the Savings Goal Calculator

  1. Choose what you want to solve for: months to reach your goal, or the monthly deposit needed for a deadline.
  2. Enter your savings goal in dollars, using the full target amount, not just the part you still need to save.
  3. Enter the amount you have already saved. Enter 0 if you are starting from scratch.
  4. For the months mode, enter your planned monthly deposit. For the deposit mode, enter the number of months until your deadline.
  5. Enter an expected annual return rate. Use 0% for an account with no return, or a modest rate for an interest-bearing account.
  6. Tap Calculate, then read the months to goal, the total you contribute, the interest earned, and the projected final balance.

Use round, honest numbers first. A deposit you can keep every month beats an ambitious plan that stops after two months.

What Changes Your Timeline

Your monthly deposit

Your deposit is usually the biggest lever you control. A larger deposit almost always brings the finish date much closer. Even an extra $50 a month adds up: over three years that is $1,800 of extra contributions, plus any interest on it.

Your starting savings

Money you have already saved shortens the journey twice. First, it reduces the gap you still need to close. Second, it starts earning interest right away. That is why two people with the same goal and deposit can finish months apart.

Your return rate

A higher return rate helps, but it should never be the whole plan. A rate of 6% on a small balance adds only a few dollars a month at first, while a steady deposit adds hundreds. Use a conservative rate so your plan still works if returns are lower than expected. Keep emergency money separate from long-term goals, and think about a separate emergency cushion before you lock money away for a distant target.

Your deadline

A fixed deadline reverses the question. Instead of asking when you will finish, you ask what you must save each month to finish on time. If the required deposit is more than you can afford, the honest options are to extend the deadline, lower the goal, or raise your starting savings. Checking what you actually bring home each month can help you judge whether a deposit is affordable.

Worked Examples

The table below uses cases tested in the calculator itself, so every number below is verified rather than estimated.

CaseInputsResult
Months mode, no returnGoal $20,000, saved $2,000, deposit $500 per month, rate 0%36 months, contributions $18,000.00, interest $0.00, final balance $20,000.00
Deposit mode, no returnGoal $10,000, saved $1,000, deadline 12 months, rate 0%Required deposit $750.00 per month
Months mode, 6% returnGoal $10,000, saved $1,000, deposit $300 per month, rate 6%28 months, contributions $8,400.00, interest $742.23, final balance $10,142.23

Notice how the third example finishes above the goal. That happens because the final monthly deposit is added in full, even though only part of it was needed. The first example is also a useful check: $2,000 already saved plus 36 deposits of $500 equals $20,000 exactly.

Savings Goal Calculator FAQs

How much should I save each month toward a goal?

There is no single right amount. Start with what your budget allows after essentials, then use the calculator to see whether that deposit meets your deadline. If it does not, adjust the goal, deadline, or deposit.

Should I include money I have already saved?

Yes. Enter the full amount already set aside for this goal. Leaving it out makes the timeline look longer than it really is.

What return rate should I use?

Use a conservative rate that matches the account you plan to use. Use 0% if you are unsure, or if the money will sit in an account that pays no interest. A higher rate is only a forecast, not a promise.

What if my goal is already reached?

If your starting savings already meet or pass the goal, the required deposit is $0 and the months to goal is 0. That is a good moment to set a new goal or move the surplus to a different purpose.

Why is my required deposit lower when the return rate is higher?

Interest covers part of the gap between your starting savings and your goal. When the rate rises, interest does more of the work, so your own deposits can be smaller.

Can I use this calculator for a house deposit or a holiday?

Yes. The math is the same for any fixed savings target. Enter the full target amount, your current savings for that purpose, and your deadline or deposit, and the calculator will show the timeline or the monthly amount you need.
